Congratulations to Eric Bush and Jeremy McIntosh for being selected as one of the recipients for the 2020 Paul Gleason Lead by Example award. Four individuals and one group from across the wildland fire service have been chosen to receive this national award.
The award was created by the NWCG Leadership Committee to remember Paul Gleason’s contributions to the wildland fire service. During a career spanning five decades, Paul was a dedicated student of fire, a teacher of fire, and a leader of firefighters. The intent of this award is to recognize individuals or groups who exhibit this same spirit and who exemplify the wildland fire leadership values and principles. Eric and Jeremy's work in support of the Wildland Fire Leadership Development Program has been a demonstration of motivation and vision.
Eric and Jeremy are being recognized for their unwavering commitment to make rappel operations safer and modern. Although numerous individuals assisted with the “Next Generation” project, your motivation and vision following the tragic loss of one of your own became the impetus for such complex change. Honoring our fallen by learning and making the system better for the National Rappel Program and the wider wildland fire service is what right looks like and is commended.
Over a decade their careers have been dedicated to bringing about this complex change. Their leadership example upheld our values of Duty, Respect, and Integrity and can be seen through the groups they have led and the products they have influenced. Regardless of the barriers encountered, they maintained high standards for training and certification. They sought feedback throughout the process and actively listened others. Their leadership efforts make for a safer working environment and will serve the wildland fire service for years to come.
Eric and Jeremy have provided an example for others to follow.
