Consciously or subconsciously, people go through this cycle every time they make a decision.
A forum where students of fire and leadership come together to discuss, debate and exchange leadership development concepts, experience, and thoughts with an intent to promote cultural change in the workforce and strengthen the wildland fire service and the communities they serve.

When most people think of the Wildland Fire Leadership Development Program (WFLDP), they think of the L-courses (L-180, L-280, L-380, L-381, L-480, L-481, and L-580). Did you know that the curriculum is only one of three components that make up the WFLDP?

Ok, this sounds obvious, but leadership lessons can be found in all kinds of books. While there are definitely good books on leadership development specifically, we can find examples of good leadership and tools for being a better leader in a wide variety of book topics. One of my favorite leadership books (often used in L-course prework) is The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, which is a book of historical fiction (although closely based on actual people and events).
I’ve been fortunate to be able to help the Wildland Fire Leadership Development Program (WFLDP) out for the past 6 (almost 7) years as the Steward/Curator for the Professional Reading List, and this year marks the 6th iteration of the list in the current format.
One way to introduce reading list topics to your crew, module, or unit is to use short video clips about the book or topic. It sounds like a cop-out to say it, but you don’t necessarily have to read an entire book to get the best ideas out of it, even though there’s definitely more value in reading the whole book and discussing it with others.

The ultimate purpose of leading in the wildland fire service is to protect life, property, and natural resources.
“The WFLDP is announcing the 2021 Professional Reading List! The four books chosen for this year are: Sailing True North by Admiral James Stavridis (USN Ret.); The Thirtymile Fire by John Maclean; Self-Compassion by Kristin Neff; and A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell.
