Command Based on Intent

Lt. Col. Chris Raible [Wikipedia]
On December 9, 2011, Lt. Col. Chris “Otis” Raible, Commanding Officer of Marine Attack Squadron VMA 211 (the Avengers), issued his commander’s guidance for squadron attack pilots. Lt. Col. Raible was killed in action September 14, 2012, but his leadership legacy lives on to influence the world he left behind. Multiple fire leaders shared this intent statement with us, now we share it with our audience. May his influence provide wildland fire leaders with an example of clear leader's intent.

Challenge #26 - Art of Leadership

The next time you experience a failure, think about why you failed instead of who was at fault. Try to look at it objectively so that you can do better next time. Ask yourself:
  • What lessons have I learned?
  • How can I turn the failure into success?
  • Where did I succed as well as fail?

Be Better

weather kit and backpack

A couple years ago, I was talking to a senior executive from a local multi-level marketing company on leadership. I thought we were talking about delivering a leadership session to others, but I got schooled in leadership instead. In a nutshell, she taught me that being the best doesn't make you better.

Let Go & Lead

Think of how great our teams would be if we were able to balance goal attainment and worker satisfaction. Rarely does this happen, but this goal should be to what we all strive. One thing a leader can do to make more effective teams is to share elements of control with their team members.

Leadership Under the Microscope

(Credit: Kermy/Pixabay)
Are you expecting to lead or learn to be a leader without a exerting a little energy? Leadership development is an active process the requires engagement both followers and leaders.

As a wildland fire professional, each one of us has a duty to take care of those we lead or follow, those we work beside, and those we serve. This duty requires we take an active role in whatever level of leadership we find ourselves.

So what does it mean to take an active role in the process? Let's go back to learning about science and cell transport.
