Congratulations to Bea Day for being selected as one of the recipients for the 2021 Paul Gleason Lead by Example award. Three individuals and one group from across the wildland fire service have been chosen to receive this national award.
The award was created by the NWCG Leadership Committee to remember Paul Gleason’s contributions to the wildland fire service. During a career spanning five decades, Paul was a dedicated student of fire, a teacher of fire, and a leader of firefighters. The intent of this award is to recognize individuals or groups who exhibit this same spirit and who exemplify the wildland fire leadership values and principles. Bea's work in support of the Wildland Fire Leadership Development Program has been a demonstration of mentoring and teamwork.
Bea is recognized for her leadership with the Incident Management Remote Response (IMRR) working group, most notably assisting the wildland fire service to navigate incident response during the pandemic response. Leading one group is hard enough, but she kept nine workgroups functioning in unison to provide coordination and consistency across incident management teams. Through her leadership and strong leader’s intent, unity of effort was possible during a very active and complex fire year.
The use of relationships, knowledge, skills, and abilities to bring forth new ways of doing business through the IMRR positively impacted our workforce and incident management teams through innovation and consistency, impacting our doctrine, policies, and procedures. The journey may have been difficult, but she persevered by doing the right things for the right reasons—the people on the ground.
